On Early beetles the starting point is the Pitman arm shaft diameter there are only 2 the older model 28mm diameter and the newer model 24mm diameter. As older model boxes are hard and expensive to come by they are often swapped out for the readily available later model

24mm diameter. This necessitates swapping the older Pitman arm for a newer model with matching 24mm diameter hole but normally cheaper and easier overall. Salient points the earlier model was considered stronger the later model is easier to find. For wider wheel and narrow beam fans later models Pitman arms can be adapted to have steering lock adjusters welded to the beam.
